The mantra behind Bruce Lee’s fitness workout was “Absorb what is useful and reject what is useless.” Following this philosophy, he absorbed positivity, freshness and openness, and eliminated negative resources, closed-calling nature and shyness.

Bruce Lee’s Workout Routine

Lee fitness training initiated with martial arts practice only. He first learned traditional Wing Chun style of Kung Fu from his master Yip Man. As the years rolled over, he created his own style, called Jeet Kune Do. Lee called his fighting style as “a style without style”. This was a free flowing martial arts fighting style that was much different from typical fighting styles.

Bruce Lee included three key elements in his workout routine – cardiovascular, weight training and stretching, in order to gain flexibility, strength and endurance. Lee practiced everyday with a certain set of kicks and punches. Here is the list of punches and kicks which he followed:

Lee’s Weight Training

Usually, martial art performers never prefer to do weight training thinking it will make them look heavy and big. With a heavy toned body, the body movements get restricted while fighting. Lee also believed the same, but he realized its uses at a later stage. So, he continued to do weights as a part of his workout routine on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Lee’s Cardio Routine

Bruce Lee used to run every Monday, Wednesday and Friday a 4-mile circuit in between 20-25 minutes. He also did 30 minutes jump rope followed with 45 minutes cycling on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The other workouts on which he emphasized were sprinting and interval training. This increased his overall endurance.

The famous Lee core is a gifted fitness training for all the martial art performers and athletes that is being followed all over the world even today. Lee worked out all day long to build his core strength that gave him magical powers to kick down the enemies in the ring within a few minutes. His trainer used to drop an exercise ball from a preferred height on his abdomen to increase his core strength. This also helped him to take more blows during every fight without feeling the pain. He used to perform 5 sets each of side bends, leg raises and sit-ups on the daily basis.

His Combination of Workout with Nutrition Paid Him Well

Lee also followed meditation to relax himself after the workout sessions. This gave him mental strength and ability to focus while doing the workouts and also while fighting. He also focused on nutritious diet to supplement his workout routine. He totally avoided consuming coffee and preferred to drink tea. He also used vitamin supplements to increase his physical strength. He ate more meals, but in smaller portions, which is a typical Chinese way of eating. It kept him active and energetic. He completely avoided refined flour and dairy products. He was a meat lover, especially liver and beef. By consuming whey powder and protein drinks, he added 30 kg to his muscles.

His Commitment

His dedication and commitment towards workout was worth appraising. Whatever he did was to strengthen his body. He used to work out for long hours each day. In order to fortify his knuckles and grips, he used the wheel while driving. When he came to a hill while walking, he always used to sprint up it. He would even carry his exercise at the locations where it seemed to be an impossible task.
